Abstract A review of 702 sets of published pasture data show there is some constancy in the relative contribution of different species in pasture, with a high linear correlation between logarithm of percentage contribution and rank of a species. The best explicit model for mathematical description of pasture composition was the geometric series. The best of the random models was the pre-emptive function. The results are discussed in relation to the general theory of pasture composition and alternative pasture sampling techniques.
