THE LEAFLESS SPECIES OF JUNCUS IN NEW ZEALAND

Abstract Ten indigenous rush species of Juncus L. subgenus Genuini (Buchenau 1906) are recognised, /. pallidus R. Br., /. procerus E. Mey., /. pauciflorus R. Br., /. gregiflorus L. A. S. Johnson, /. distegus sp. nov., /, australis Hook, f., /. amabilis sp. nov., /. filicaulis Buch., /. usitatus L. A. S. Johnson and /. sarophorus L. A. S. Johnson. Four species are regarded as introduced, /. effusus L., /. conglomeratus L., /. inflexus L. and /. subsecundus Wakefield. A key for the identification of all species is given. The species are divided into two groups on the basis of seedling morphology and stem anatomy; this grouping is related to other diagnostic characters in a table. All 10 indigenous species are self-fertile, and there was no inbreeding depression in four species tested. Data obtained from three artificial hybrids are also presented.
