THE NATURAL STERILE HYBRID CAREX DIANDRA X SECTA

Elizabeth Edgar

Botany Division, Department of Scientific and Industrial Research, Christchurch

Abstract A natural hybrid between Carex diandra Schrank and C. secta Boott has been found growing in abundance in a swamp below the Grampian Range in the Mackenzie Country. This hybrid is morphologically intermediate between the two parents and is sterile. An examination of herbarium specimens shows that the hybrid occurs elsewhere in New Zealand.
