GAULTHERIA HYBRIDS ON RAINBOW MOUNTAIN

D. A. Franklin

Forest Research Institute, Rotorua

Abstract Three populations of Gaultheria species and hybrids on Rainbow Mountain were sampled and found to consist mainly of G, antipoda, G. oppositifolia, and hybrids between these species. Seven characters were used to separate the species, and by allocating to each plant a numerical value for each character, it was possible to determine the variability of the characters and the affinities of the putative hybrids. Three main groups of plants can be recognised. (1) G. oppositifolia, partially intro-gressed by G. antipoda; (2) G. antipoda, partially introgressed by G. oppositifolia; (3) more or less intermediate hybrids which resemble G. antipoda more closely than G. oppositifolia.
