QUANTITATIVE DATA ON FOREST COMPOSITION

A. F. Mark and G.A.M. Scott

Botany Department, University of Otago, Dunedin

Abstract There are two possible sources of error in quantitative data on forest composition—the arithmetic of the calculations and the methods of sampling. Recalculations from the field data have confirmed our published values of 290 to 650 sq. ft/acre for basal areas obtained in silver beech forest above Lake Hankinson (Scott et al., 1964). These data are available for inspection. Moreover the values are consistent with those obtained from other parts of Fiordland, measured and calculated by more than one field party in more than one way.
