Abstract Observer variation in point analysis data was examined on a range of New Zealand pasture associations and found to be comparable with that recorded in the literature for other countries. The consistency of such effects was examined by separating components of variance and it was found that differences recorded between observers were not constant. The effects of different components of observer variations were considered.
