Abstract Eleven indigenous species of
Luzula DC. are recognised: related to the South American
L. racetnosa Desv. are
L. traversii (Buch.) Cheesem. (2 vars.),
L. ulophylla (Buch.) Ckn. et Laing, and
L. celala sp. nov.; belonging to the almost cosmopolitan
campestris-multiflora complex ate
L. ruja sp. nov. (2 vars),
L. banksiana E. Mey. (5 vars),
L. crinita Hook. f. (2 vars),
L. picta A. Rich. (3 vars) - all formerly treated as varieties of
L. catnpestris (L.) DC. -
L. leptophylla Buch. et Petrie, and three cushion species,
L. colensoi Hook, f.,
L. pumila Hook, f., and
L. crenulata Buch. A key is given for the identification of the indigenous species and the three most common introduced species,
L. multi-flora (Retz.) Lej.,
L. congesta (Thuill.) Lej. and
L. campestris (L.) DC. s.s. Hybridism between the species and varieties is discussed.
