Abstract Pollen of
Gingidium montanum J. R. and G. Forst. has been compared with the pollen of
Aciphylla squarrosa J. R. and G. Forst.,
Angelica sylvestris L.,
Anisotome latifolia Hook.f.,
Ligusticum scoticum L., and
Peucedanum officinale L. - type species of genera to which the 11 species of
Gingidium have been referred at various times. The results support the opinion that the genus
Gingidium should be revived. There are three pollen types within the genus, the largest group containing seven species, including
G. montanum. A smaller group includes
G. deltoideum, G. geniculatum, and G.
rosaefolium; and
G. filifolium is in a category of its own. This grouping does not correspond exactly with that proposed by Dawson in 1961, who places
G. geniculatum and
G. rosaefolium in the
G. montanum group and
G. carnosulum, G. diversifolium, and
G. filifolium in the group of G.
deltoideum. These differences give grounds for suggesting that the genus
Gingidium is not yet clearly denned and that a re-examination of the group is necessary.
