THE FRUIT OF PITTOSPORUM PIMELEOIDES

Abstract The genus Pittasporum may be divided into two groups, Bivalvae and Trivalvae, depending on the number of valves in the loculicidal capsule (Gowda, 1951; Cooper, 1956). In New Zealand, the bivalved species form the more heterogeneous group, with greater diversity in fruit and other characters. Moore and Adams (1949) showed that the fruit of P. eugenioides, P. dallii, and P. anomalum differed from other New Zealand species in having a divisible pericarp, and that P. anomalum differed still further in producing reticulately marked seeds without mucilage.
