DAY LENGTH AND FLOWERING IN THE SOLANUM AVICULARE GROUP

G. T. S. Baylis

Botany Department, University of Otago

Abstract Most members of the Solatium aviculare group flowered only in long days, but there were day-neutral races in S. simile and 5. capsiciforme. S. aviculare consisted of ecotypes in which photoperiod was adapted to latitude and temperature. A race from 6°S could flower normally in 8-hour days, and more southerly races required increasing photoperiods; but day lengths sufficing to produce flowers in warmer months produced abortive inflorescences in cooler ones. In S. laciniatum no latitudinal change in critical photoperiod was apparent.
