Notes and Comments: A new name in Sonchus for New Zealand

B. G. Hamlin*

National Museum, Private Bag, Wellington, New Zealand

Abstract Allan (1961, p. 760) made the new combination Sonchus littoralis (T. Kirk) Allan, based on 5. olera-ceus var. littoralis T. Kirk, overlooking, as indicated by Moore & Edgar (1970, p. 336), the earlier combination of Cockayne (1907). Allan's combination was accepted by Boulos (1973, p.166) in spite of his awareness (p.174) of Cockayne's priority and also in spite of the existence of the earlier homonym 5.
