Abstract When M. M. Chisholm was appointed manager of Molesworth in June 1942, he was soon convinced of the need to extend the limited amount of research carried out into the restoration of vegetation on the depleted country. At his request the Department of Lands and Survey approached Botany Division, DSIR, requesting a long-term programme of observation and experiment on the Molesworth and Tarndale blocks.
