New Zealand Fungi 31. Capnobotrys, an anamorph of Metacapnodiaceae

Abstract Seven taxa which produce a
Capnobotrys anamorph are illustrated and described. Two of these are described in the teleomorph genus
Metacapnodium, namely
M. moniliforme and
M. dingleyae sp.nov. Other species are
Capnobotrys atro-olivacea sp.nov.,
C. australis sp.nov.,
C. laterivecta sp.nov.,
C. paciflca sp.nov., and
C. paucispora sp.nov. All but
C. laterivecta and
C. paucispora produce a
Capnophialophora synanamorph. The
Metacapnodium teleomorph of
Capnobotrys atro-olivacea is briefly described but is not given nomenclatural status for lack of adequate material.
Metacapnodium moniliforme also produces a
Capnosporium synanamorph. Hyphae can fragment schizolytically in
Capnobotrys atro-olivacea.The morphology and pleomorphism of Antennaria guava Cooke {^Metacapnodium guava (Cooke) comb, nov.), Capnodium crassum Pat. {^Metacapnodium crassum (Pat.) comb, nov.), and Phragmocapnias smilacina Mendoza (= Metacapnodium smilacinum (Mendoza) comb, nov.) are discussed after a study of type collections. The circumscription of Metacapnodiaceae is discussed and named and unnamed species circumscribed in DAOM are listed and their pleomorphism is indicated. The broad or narrow host preference shown by species of Metacapnodiaceae in New Zealand is discussed.
