The vegetation of Wharekakahu, an offshore stack of the Otago coast

Abstract Wharekakahu is a small, steep-sided stack with a gently sloping plateau, located close to Otago Peninsula. Its vegetation is similar to the coastal vegetation of the islands of Foveaux Strait, being dominated by Poa astonii and Hebe elliptica. Only 12 species are recorded from the stack. The island is a valuable refuge for indigenous vegetation and species such as Lepidium oleraceum, which are now rare on the mainland.

Keywords ecology; conservation; island flora; rare species; Poa astonii; Hebe elliptica; Lepidium oleraceum.
