AbstractThe vessel elements and fibres of 203 New Zealand woody species from 81 genera belonging to 52 dicotyledonous families were examined for the presence or absence of warts. During the survey warts were found to be present in 55 species from 20 genera belonging to 12 families but were absent or rarely present in the remainder. With the exception of
Pseudopanax and
Coprosma the presence or absence of warts was consistent within all the species that were examined of the same genus.
