Abstract Epilobium petraeum Heenan is described as a new species from mountainous regions of central and north-eastern South Island, New Zealand. This perennial and entirely glabrous herb had previously been included in E. crassum Hook.f. It is recognised by a low, spreading and compact habit, red stems, opposite, dark-green, glossy leaves with the upper midrib usually red, and papillose seeds with a non-persistent coma.
