Abstract Peter Ballance is one of New Zealand's pre-eminent geologists. This essay summarises aspects of his academic career and research achievements during 38 years on staff in the Department of Geology at the University of Auckland, from 1960 to 1998. It has been prepared as a forerunner paper to the 31 geoscientific articles that follow in issues 3 and 4 of volume 47 (2004) of the New Zealand Journal of Geology and Geophysics, all submitted to honour the career and substantive contribution made by Peter in advancing our knowledge about the geology of New Zealand and its environs.
