Abstract For the first time in Taupo and in New Zealand an intersexual rainbow trout (Oncorhynchus mykiss) was identified. The fish was caught during the spawning migration by an angler fishing in the Tongariro River in June 2001. The external appearance of the fish had more male than female features. The fish had testes and ovaries distributed in a typical “lobular” form. The isolated nature of such occurrence of intersexual trout in Taupo and the high water quality in the catchment suggest that this phenomenon was most likely spontaneous rather than induced by environmental contamination.
