Supporting and Encouraging Maori and Pasifika into Science and Technology, Health and Engineering: Case Study Report

This case study report was conceptualised after the 2005 Symposium on Promoting Maori and Pasifika into health, science, and technology. It investigates programmes and initiatives that encourage and support Maori and Pasifika into science and technology, health and engineering education.

Participation in Tertiary Science and Technology Education

This report was conducted in 2006. It provides an accurate indication of student participation in science and technology education at Universities throughout New Zealand in 2005. It also compares the 2005 participation rates with those of 2004. It is a continuation and expansion on the previous study conducted in 2005 which provided a baseline for future comparisons.

Terms of Reference

  1. The Committee shall advise the Society (Council, members and staff) on matters of concern to the science, mathematics, technology, and social science education community, and respond (on request) with advice on science and technology education matters to the Society. This advice shall be given through the Chief Executive Officer, to the Executive Officer-Education and relevant staff of the Society and also to the Council through the Education Electoral College Councillor.
  2. The Committee shall act as an advocate for education in appropriate forums.
  3. The Committee shall promote education in and public awareness of science, mathematics, technology and social science.
  4. The Committee shall identify areas where science, mathematics, technology and social science education should be strengthened with a view to New Zealand's future needs.
  5. The Committee may establish and maintain links with societies from time to time, groups and agencies with an involvement in issues connected with science, mathematics, technology and social science education.
  6. The Committee may act to enhance international contacts for New Zealand educators.
  7. The Committee may be the channel of communication with international agencies, and shall coordinate New Zealand activities in relation to such agencies.
  8. The constitution and membership of the Committee shall be determined by the Council of the Royal Society of New Zealand, having regard to representation of the total range of interests to be served by the Committee.
  9. The Committee shall report annually to the Council of the Royal Society of New Zealand.
  10. Amendments to the Terms of Reference of the Committee shall be made by the Council of the Royal Society of New Zealand after consultation with and taking into account the recommendations of the Committee.

This is an Committee appointed by the Council of the Royal Society of New Zealand in terms of Sec 28(1) of the Royal Society of New Zealand Act 1997.
