James G. Hay Travel AwardThe James G. Hay Travel Award, named after a pioneer in the discipline of biomechanics in New Zealand, has been endowed by the International Society for Biomechanics (ISB) and is managed by the Royal Society of New Zealand. The award is to assist New Zealand university staff or post-graduate students in biomechanics to present a paper at each biennial ISB Congress.Dr Hay was born in Waipukura and over a career of more than 40 years, became one of the world’s pre-eminent sport biomechanists. He made a substantial contribution to NZ sports science in the 1960’s and 70’s, and the US Olympic teams through their Elite Athlete Programme. Dr Hay was a former President of the ISB, and a Charter Member of the Olympic Academy of Science. He began his professional career at the University of Otago’s School of Physical Education before his appointment at the University of Iowa, USA, a position he held until retirement in 1998. On his retirement, Dr Hay returned to New Zealand and continued his work at the University of Auckland until his death in 2002. For further information on the congress go to the ISB website.
