What is the Society?

The Royal Society of New Zealand is an independent, national academy of sciences, a federation of some 60 scientific and technological societies, and individual members. We promote science and technology in schools, in industry and in society. We administer several funds for science and technology, publish science journals, offer advice to Government, and foster international scientific contact and co-operation.

Our membership currently comprises over 1200 members and 330 elected Fellows, plus 10 regional branches, and 60 constituent scientific and technological societies, representing nearly 20,000 scientists, technologists and technicians.

First established in 1867, the Royal Society is modelled on the Royal Society (London).
