Fellows elected in 2002

John Abrahamson, Associate Professor in Chemical and Process Engineering, University of Canterbury, has contributed visionary insights regarding both natural phenomena and industrial processes. He has found common themes in ball lightning and in dust collectors, in snow avalanches and in turbulence promoters, by seeking the fundamental reasons for the behaviour of particulate solids. In a 1978 paper in Nature, he and his co-workers reported the first observations of "carbon fibres" on carbon electrodes and their subsequent electron diffraction work in 1979 revealed the structure of what have come to be called "carbon nanotubes". Professor Abrahamson has an eye for experimental exceptions and has exploited these exceptions to challenge current theory.

Patrick Richard Lee Browne, Associate Professor, Geothermal Institute, University of Auckland, is recognised globally as a scientist who has laid the foundations for much of our current understanding of modern and ancient hydrothermal systems. He is one of the leading authorities worldwide on the study of active and fossil geothermal systems, his early work having helped establish techniques for assessing the structure of geothermal systems by using the mineral assemblages in altered rocks sampled in drill holes. His meticulously detailed studies and seminal interpretations of New Zealand geothermal systems have made them international benchmarks. His recent work on siliceous hot spring deposits (sinters) has provided important new insights regarding the progression of mineralogic and textural changes over tens of thousands of years. Professor Browne has mentored an exceptionally large number of graduate students from around the world and been an outstanding research leader and educator.

Allan Muirhead Crawford, Platform Leader, Animal Genomics, AgResearch, is world-renowned for his research in sheep genomics, being one of the first people to realise the utility of simple sequence repeats or micro-satellite markers in genetic linkage studies. The culmination of this work was the first genetic linkage map of sheep in 1995. In addition, his research group has made an outstanding contribution to functional genomics, through the discovery of genes associated with reproductive, disease resistance and production traits, genetic work which will have a material impact on the pace at which the animal-based biotechnology sector can grow in the immediate future. Dr Crawford's work has been characterised by the setting of exceptionally high standards and through leadership by example.

Robert Olin Davis, Professor of Civil Engineering, University of Canterbury, is regarded as an international leader in the development of the practice of geotechnical engineering, based on an understanding of physical processes and mathematical modelling. He has also made seminal contributions to seismic research. His work on constitutive models of soils, on seismic liquefaction, and his introduction of thermodynamic concepts into continuum mechanical descriptions of soil behaviour, has been widely influential. These studies have culminated in a better understanding of the stability of slopes and the mechanics of landslides. Professor Davis has exhibited an ability to translate fundamental principles into practical outcomes.

John Roger Flenley, Professor of Geography, Massey University, is an innovative, natural scientistwho has made an outstanding contribution to social science. His work on Quaternary palynology in Britain prepared him for pioneering the study of Quaternary interactions between humans and the environment in the Pacific region, a field in which he is a leading figure. His research concerns the prehistory of interactions between people and the environment, and in particular the impact of colonisation, a novel feature being the proxy evidence of human impact on vegetation. His work on Rapa Nui/Easter Island helped create a new field of environmental archeology. Professor Flenley has also contributed to methodological developments in palynology, most recently involving scanning electron microscopy.

Rosalind Susan Gibson, Professor in Human Nutrition, University of Otago, is a widely acknowledged leader in the field of human nutrition, maintaining an outstanding research programme aimed at understanding the causes and effects of trace element nutritional deficiencies, and especially dietary zinc and iron. A unique characteristic of her work has been her capacity to blend basic laboratory research with field studies done around the world. More than anyone else she has highlighted the risks of trace mineral deficiencies in communities that depend almost entirely on vegetables for their source of nutrients. She has pushed her research all the way to developing home-based culturally acceptable methods for combating these problems, in the process acting as a consultant for many international agencies. Professor Gibson's book, "Principles of Nutritional Assessment" is a widely cited standard reference text.

Harlene Hayne, Professor of Psychology, University of Otago, has had a significant international impact in the field of developmental psychobiology. Her research findings on the development of memory have influenced the direction of research in other laboratories around the world. Her work has examined infantile amnesia and the way in which preverbal memory in infants translates into language. She has also furthered our understanding of deferred imitation in infancy, in age-related changes in memory, and in the way children are able to provide accurate eyewitness reports. In addition to her personal research achievements, Professor Hayne has been an effective research leader and ambassador for science.

David Kelly, Associate Professor in Plant and Microbial Sciences, University of Canterbury, is an innovative plant ecologist who is challenging accepted theory and providing new insights. His work is firmly placing New Zealand's plant communities on the international stage in several areas. He is particularly well-known for his work on "masting", the production of huge seed masses in "erratic" years which intersperse longer periods of low seed output. His study of the New Zealand grass Chionochloa, has been especially important and has led to evidence concerning recent climate change. Professor Kelly's papers are about ideas, tested against observations based on careful long-term studies. His research is bold and imaginative, with high international impact.

Kenneth John Dallas MacKenzie, Associate Professor in Chemistry, Victoria University of Wellington, and Senior Scientist, Industrial Research Limited, is recognised for his excellence in fundamental research concerning the chemistry of ceramics, minerals and inorganic materials. His work is characterised by a facility for experimental innovation and has involved the use of a wide range of spectroscopies. He is especially noted for his work using Mössbauer spectroscopy and solid state Nuclear Magnetic Resonance. In this latter work he has been effective in using a wide range of less commonly used stable nuclei to gain important new insights regarding chemical structure in mineral systems and ceramics. He has developed a number of important international links, he has published extensively, and most recently he has co-authored a major research monograph on Multi-Nuclear Solid State NMR.

Robert Iain McLachlan, Professor in Mathematics, Massey University, is an international leader in the mathematics of geometric integration, a subject which has grown out of numerical analysis and which is concerned with the approximate solution of differential equations which satisfy invariant conditions. Geometric integration takes account of conservation laws, often using the machinery of Lie Groups. Professor McLachlan has carried out pioneering work in the theories of composition and splitting methods, of Lie-Poisson integrators, of symplectic integration and in the numerical treatment of constrained Hamiltonian systems. He has been prepared to argue effectively for his methodologies, winning leading mathematical researchers to his approach. He has thus not only made important contributions to this subject, but he has also stimulated others to work in this significant area of research.

Alison Ruth Mercer, Associate Professor in Zoology, University of Otago, has made far-reaching contributions to research concerning learning and memory. She has used animals that undergo metamorphosis, primarily insects, as a model system in which to study brain development and the role of biogenic amines in the functional development of the central nervous system. The modulatory effects of the biogenic amines, dopamine and serotonin, on the structural and functional development of nerve cells, along with the cellular mechanisms that underlie their action, are a focus of her research. Professor Mercer has made fundamental discoveries about what happens to discrete parts of the central nervous system in response to chronic exposure to certain stimuli versus what happens to defined brain areas as a consequence of learning. Her work on the honey bee has provided beautiful evidence for distinguishing context-dependent plasticity from plastic alterations of nervous connections associated with chronic sensory stimulation. She is a lateral thinker, a courageous individual and an outstanding communicator.

Harjinder Singh, Professor of Dairy Science and Technology, Massey University, is a world authority on the chemistry of milk proteins and their relationship to dairy technology. He has made major contributions in research concerning the heat stability of milk, the functionality of milk protein products and the coagulation of milk by acid and rennet. His recent work addresses the inter-relationships between rheology, microstructure and the sensory characteristics of dairy products, as well as protein-polysaccharide interactions. Professor Singh is the model applied scientist, who approaches his work with both breadth and depth. He exhibits a remarkable ability to transfer fundamental knowledge to practical application. In the process he has exercised strong scientific leadership and mentored many younger scientists.

Robin Andrew James Smith, Professor in Chemistry, University of Otago, has demonstrated distinguished scholarship in organic chemistry, achieving notable successes in multi-disciplinary research. His work has led to mechanistic understanding of the conjugate addition reactions of organo-copper species, leading to a new synthetic methodology of practical importance. In addition, his work in enantio-selective organic synthesis has resulted in chiral biaryl diols of exceptional value. Further, in collaboration with Dr Mike Murphy, Professor Smith designed and synthesised biologically active molecules with the potential for treating diseases of mitochondrial malfunction, such as Freidrich's ataxia, Huntingdon's disease and Parkinson's disease, a development which has led to clinical trials and commercialisation. His research in organic chemistry exhibits breadth, adaptability and imagination.

Graham John Weir, Team Leader, Applied Mathematics, Industrial Research Limited, has applied mathematics to practical problems of considerable importance to New Zealand. He is best known internationally for his work on fluids, both gas and liquid, flowing in porous solids, work that has led to important insights in geothermal power production, in the estimation of geothermal and natural gas reserves, and in agricultural irrigation. He has also made significant contributions to our understanding of mineral exploration, granular flows in industrial processes, underground storage of greenhouse gases, and lahar flows, to name but a selection. Dr Weir's work is characterised by mathematical ingenuity and beauty, and by his ability to make his ideas comprehensible to non-mathematicians. In addition, he has shown exceptional leadership and the ability to promote his discipline by reaching out to a wide scientific and technical constituency.
