Jillian Frances Evans, is currently a Director of Merck Research Laboratories
in New Jersey, USA, where she directs their research on new drugs. The identification
of several new receptors as targets for new drug development has been her major
research focus recently. In addition, Dr Evans is an authority on the biochemistry
and pharmacology of prostaglandins, leukotrienes and lipoxins. Wherever she
travels in New Zealand she demonstrates a strong commitment to encouraging the
teaching of science, and to encouraging young women to enter science.

Warwick Fairley Vincent, Canada Research Chair in Aquatic Ecosystem
Studies, Université Laval, Canada, is an eminent aquatic scientist and
head of a world-leading team devoted to the study of the ecology of polar freshwaters
and of the influence of UV-radiation in natural waters. He has made major contributions
to New Zealand's lake and ocean ecosystems, and to research in the Ross Sea
sector of Antarctica. His studies have covered the productivity of the New Zealand
Exclusive Economic Zone, nuisance algal blooms in lakes, the impact of catchment
nutrients in lakes, and the role of ultra-violet radiation and climate change
on aquatic systems. He currently maintains a high level of involvement in New
Zealand science.

Mark Warner, Professor of Physics, University of Cambridge, is one of
the world's leading physicists working in the field of soft condensed matter.
He has developed the definitive theories on liquid crystalline and other ordered,
non-linear elastomers for which he has been awarded the Maxwell Medal and Prize
of the Institute of Physics. His recent work with Heino Finkelmann of Freiburg
University on soft elasticity and mechanico-optical coupling in elastomers has
won him the Humboldt Research Prize. Mark Warner is one of those rare theorists
who communicates fluently with experimentalists. His mathematics is always elegant
and crisp and he brings deep physical insight to bear in tackling the complex
processes which govern order, dynamics and deformation. He was born and educated
in New Zealand and maintains strong scientific and personal links here. He is
one of our most distinguished scientists living abroad.
