Zoo Challenge 2008

Design an enrichment “toy” for white rhino, ruffed lemur, or a kea.

You may:

  1. Make a design only.

Make this very clear, with details of all parts and materials used.

  1. Make a design and a working model. Remember to check the types of materials Dave mentioned.

Send photograph by 4th June 2008 to:  Mike Rogers, School Support Services, University of Waikato, PB 3105, Hamilton, Email: mrogers@waikato.ac.nz

The zoo staff and Dave will look at your work and possibly select suitable ones for the zoo. Please do not send any models, just photographs. We will publish some of the designs that are received in the Starters & Strategies magazine and also on the BP Challenge website.

Possible Design Sequence if a working model is to be made

As far as possible, students themselves research and decide on the challenge.

  • Research  (using books, internet, zoo experts)
  • What are the natural behaviours/characteristics of the animal?
  • Brainstorm possible tasks/challenge for selected animal
  • Decide on task/challenge
  • Constraints (cost, safety, zoo requests, time)
  • Considerations (aesthetics, size number)
  • Design task/Challenge
  • Team plan
  • Construct test and modify
  • Paper and sticky tape working model?
  • More authentic material model?
  • Prototype?
  • Present to class, school or zoo
  • Advertise or promote
  • Assess
  • Discuss possible changes
