Prepared challenge: ginger beer

Task

With the active participation of all members of your team, your task is to brew and bottle a six pack of Ginger Beer. The bottles should be 330ml size, or similar, and sealed or capped efficiently. The bottles will be labelled and promoted with your own graphics or design, given a product name and made to look attractive and marketable. The six bottles must fit neatly into a firmly constructed cardboard carry case, capable of being moved easily and safely.

Materials 

All materials are to be sourced locally with the assistance of team members.

Recipe

Recipes for Ginger Beer vary enormously. You need to do some research on the best recipe for your team. Look in School Journals, cookery books, books on brewing ginger beer and the internet for a huge range of options.

Portfolio

Each entry on the day is to be accompanied by a printed portfolio which must contain the following information :

  • Team members names and the tasks they undertook in the Ginger Beer project
  • Ginger Beer recipe and an outline of the production process
  • A copy of the prototype label used on your bottle
  • A scale copy of the pattern you used to construct the cardboard carry case
  • An A4 sized advertising poster to promote your product

Your portfolio needs to be attractively presented and finished to a high standard.

Judging

Judges will assess your entry on the day looking at the visual impact and functionality of the carry case as well as the uniformity of your six bottles of Ginger Beer, including bottle size and labelling. The portfolio will be assessed on the criteria outlined above. A bottle from your six-pack with be opened at random and evaluated by the judges. Criteria will include taste, clarity and the effervescence of your Ginger Beer as well as its potential market appeal.
