In 1996, two Scottish organisations, the Roslin Institute and PPLTherapeutics, collaborated to create Dolly the sheep, the first mammal ever cloned from adult DNA.

She was kept under wraps until 1997, but once her birth was announced she rapidly became the focus of debate all around the world on the ethics of cloning.

Dolly died on 14 February 2003 after developing a lung disease but she remains in the public eye in more ways than one. Her preserved body is on permanent display in The Royal Museum of Scotland. Her life story initiated a trend that has led to considerable continuing debate on the whole cloning issue.
