A widespread outbreak of Foot and Mouth Disease (FMD) hit Britain in the first half of 2001 and massive resources were assigned to eradicate the highly infectious disease.

Over two million animals have been slaughtered and there has been considerable disruption to a range economic activities, not just agriculture.
