2007 genETHICS winners

Five students were selected as essay finalists for the Genethics Essay Competition sponsored by the Bioethics Council and the New Zealand Organisation of Rare Disorders.  The winner was announced on the 18 July at the Human Genetic Society of Australasia Conference.
             
They were:    

1st place Lam Nguyen from Nelson College for Girls'  

2nd place Lee White, Columba College, Dunedin

Other finalists were: 

Catrina Hunter, St Andrew's College, Christchurch;
Jonathan Hackney, Lindisfarne College, Hastings and
Yiling Zhang from Diocesan School for Girls' Auckland.



A total of 48 essays were received from students by the Royal Society of New Zealand and the selection panel chose five students as finalists who were bought together at the HGSA Conference where they were involved in a panel discussion facilitated by Rae Lamb, Deputy Health and Disability Commissioner who asked the students some thought provoking questions about the storage of blood spot cards.

Lam who was the youngest participant in the essay competition won $600.00 as first prize.
