Successful students selected for 2005 International Science Schools

Biofutures

The following students have been selected to attend Biofutures from the 26th June to 2nd July.

Jennifer Ho from Epsom Girls' Grammar School; Tori Collins, 17, attending Opotiki College; Lisa Kaan, Otago Girls High School; Sarah Wyse, Diocesan School for Girls', Auckland.

These students will join many Australian students in a week of hands-on experience with the latest biomedical equipment and techniques; hear from some of Australia's leading researchers in biotechnology and medical engineering and visit local centres of biomedical research. Costs for travel and registration has been supported by New Zealand Trade & Enterprise.

Harry Messel International Science School

Six students have been selected to attend the Harry Messel International Science School in Sydney, which takes place every two years. They are Chloe Waddell, Westlake Girls' High School; Alex Gordon, Hutt Valley High School; Vaishnaavi Gnanasampanthan, Wellington Girls College; Amy Russ, Palmerston North Girls' High School; Jessica Wong, Epsom Girls' Grammar School and Andrew King from Lynfield College, Auckland.

They will join 140 Australian students for two weeks of advanced study in topics in modern science. The Royal Society received many high quality applications and so it is to their credit that they were selected.

The theme for the 2005 International Science School is 'Waves of the Future', in celebration of the International Year of Physics. The participants will stay within the University of Sydney and meals, accommodation and activities are covered by the University. The two weeks will involve lectures by internationally respected scientists, together with tours, experiments and social events.

London International Youth Science Forum

Sarah Wong, 17, a student at Nayland College, Nelson, and Lychhun Kouch, 17 from Aorere College, Papatoetoe, have been selected by the Royal Society of New Zealand to attend the London International Youth Science Forum in July.

This wonderful opportunity has been funded through the Building Research Association of New Zealand and the British Council New Zealand and will enable Sarah and Lychhun to join over 300 students from 60 countries in London. The students will participate in lectures, workshops, and visit scientific and technological institutions in and around London over two weeks.

USA Space Camp

Timothy Bishop, 16, from Spotswood College in New Plymouth, and Emma Dunning, 17, from Kapiti College, are the two lucky students that have been selected by the Royal Society of New Zealand to attend the USA Space Camp in Huntsville, Alabama, United States in July.

Emma and Timothy will join 150 students selected from around the world to participate in an action packed week which will include hands-on astronaut training, as well as learning about the mental, emotional and physical demands astronauts must face. The trainees are also involved in leadership training and will experience four G's of lift off force and actual weightlessness in the Space simulator.

Emma has a deep interest in astro-physics and has been a key member in the Meet the Stars Astronomy Club at Kapiti College. She also helps runs tutorials, on subjects related to astronomy and physics for other high school and primary school students. Timothy has a real passion for 'astronomy, space and robotics' and his goal is to join the United States Air Force and obtain a degree in aerospace engineering.
