34th Harry Messel International Science School, Sydney

1-14TH July 2007

Open to students in Yr12 - 13

The Professor Harry Messel International Science School gathers together top science students from nine countries for two weeks of lectures, laboratory tours and experiments and social events. This scholarship includes registration and accommodation/food expenses at the University of Sydney. Return airfare to Sydney is the responsibility of the student. However assistance for international travel may be available from the Talented School Students Travel Award fund. Website: www.rsnz.org/funding/talent/

Applicants should have a high level of achievement in Science and Mathematics and be good communicators.

Biofutures 2007, Brisbane, June/July 2007

Open to Yr12 and 13 students

Interested in biotechnology and biomedical science? The Royal Society of New Zealand is offering an opportunity for up to ten students to attend Biofutures 2007 which takes place in Brisbane June/July. This forum will bring together some 80 students from Australia and New Zealand who are studying two of any of the following subjects Physics, Chemistry or Biology.

You will participate in hands-on experience with the latest biomedical equipment and techniques and hear from some of Australia's leading researchers as well as visit local centres of bio-medical research.

Australian International Space School, 19th — 25th July 2007

Open to students in Yr 11, 12 and 13

This is opportunity is available for six students who have a passion for astronomy to visit astronomy organizations and places of interest in Sydney and Canberra If you are already involved in an astronomy club then this would be an advantage. Return air travel from New Zealand to Sydney should be paid for by the participants however you may be assisted by the Talented School Students Travel Award http://www.rsnz.org/education/science_schools/

London International Youth Science Forum 25th July — 8th August 2007

Open to Yr13 students only

The theme for 2007 is 'Managing the Warming World'. Join 300 students from all over the world at the University of London in a programme of science, lectures, demonstrations, seminars, visits to scientific and technological institutes and social activity and experience the culture of London. Registration, accommodation and air travel costs will be sponsored but successful applicants are required to also contribute $500.00 towards costs.

USA International Space Camp, Huntsville, Alabama, 20th - 27th July 2007

Open to students in Yr 12 - 13

This is opportunity for one male and female student, plus one teacher, who have a passion for astronomy to participate in an international gathering and experience the advanced space school program at Huntsville, Alabama. If you are already involved in an astronomy club then this would be an advantage. Return air travel costs from New Zealand to Huntsville, Alabama are the responsibility of the student/teacher. Tuition, food and accommodation will be provided by the International Space Camp. Funding to assist with international travel may be available from the Talented School Students Travel Award fund. Youth ANZAAS 2007 Trinity College, University of Western Australia, July 8th - 12th 2007 

What is Youth ANZAAS?

A residential conference of science students from Years 10, 11 and 12 in Australian schools will be held from the evening of Sunday 8th July to the morning of Thursday, 12th July 2007, organised by the Australian & New Zealand Association for the Advancement of Science (ANZAAS), one of Australia’s oldest scientific associations.  Students will be accommodated in Trinity College, an affiliate college of the University of Western Australia, located in about 4 km west of the centre of Perth.

Students need to have a passion for science and have good oral and communication skills.

If selected the registration of $350.00 plus the cost of the airfare would possibly be covered if the successful applicant applies to the Talented School Students Travel Award. http://www.rsnz.org/funding/talent/ 

All applicants will need to send a letter outlining why they would like to attend and also a letter of recommendation from the HOD Science and Principal is required.  A brief CV and scholastic record is also required together with proof of NZ citizenship or permanent residency.

IMPORTANT INFORMATION ABOUT APPLYING FOR THE ABOVE OPPORTUNITIES

Those students who apply for any of the above science schools must either be a NZ citizen or have permanent residency status. Students must send four unstapled copies for each of the science schools they apply for. Each application must include a letter from both the HOD Science and the Principal, include a scholastic record, brief CV (no more than 2 pages), copy of passport details and a letter from the applicant outlining why they would like to attend.
