Student showcase

Jeffrey Azzato

Jeffrey Azzato attended the Genesis National Science & Technology Forum and the Royal Society of New Zealand also selected Jeffrey to attend the Australian International Space School in 2001, his last year of college.

Last year he finished a BSc (Applied Statistics, Mathematics and Statistics) and a BA (Economics and Operations Research) at Victoria University. Jeffrey is now taking a programme involving algebra, analysis, combinatorics, probability and category theory for his BSc (Hons) in Mathematics.

Jeffrey had a very interesting and enjoyable summer, working both as a research assistant in the School of Economics & Finance and as a technician at a local computer store. His work for the School of Economics & Finance has been in the field of computational economics, updating software developed for the discretisation and solution of simple stochastic optimal control problems.

He was also fortunate to be able to attend (thanks to the NZMRI) the Workshop on Geometric Methods in the Topology of 3-Dimensional Manifolds held in Taipa during January. It was nice to hear some eminent mathematicians speak on some of their current research topics, and to encounter new ideas and fields of study. Northland also put on beautiful weather and this photo was taken in a local Kauri reserve.

Next year Jeffrey intends to start working towards a Masters in mathematics.
