Manhire Prize for Creative Science Writing

2007 Topic Theme: CLIMATE CHANGE

Many scientists and social scientists believe that climate change is a serious threat to human civilisation. Regardless of climate change, we need to find sustainable forms of agriculture, manufacturing and energy.  How will we respond?  How can we respond?  

Fiction winner: 16 Planets, by Bryan Walpert

Non-fiction winner: Touchstones By Xenicus, by Alison Ballance

This theme applies to both the fiction and creative non-fiction categories.  Entries will be judged on their literary merits, and the extent to which they are likely to engage the reader. 

About the Prize:

  • There are two categories: fiction and non-fiction.
  • There is no age restriction.
  • A winner will be chosen in EACH category, and awarded $2500.
  • There will be a different topic theme each year, which will apply to both the fiction and non-fiction categories.  
  • Entries must be 2,000 words minimum, 3,000 words maximum.
  • The NZ Listener will promote the competition and print the winning fiction and creative non-fiction entries.
  • The International Institute of Modern Letters will shortlist entries and appoint a judge to select the two winners.
  •  The Royal Society will administer the competition and arrange for the winners to attend a presentation function, all expenses paid.
