Until the introduction of the Royal Society of New Zealand Act 1997,
the President of the Royal Society Council and of the Academy Council
was one and the same person. Under the 1997 Act, the Academy may act
autonomously and regulate its precedures in such a manner as it thinks
fit. It may also elect its own President and has in fact done that.
