From
the President of the Royal Society of
Royal Society Welcomes
The Royal Society of New Zealand is very pleased
to see the
government’s $700M new investment in scientific research, spanning the
continuum
of fundamental science through to market access.
“Our outstanding record of achievement in food and
agricultural science should leave no doubt about the potential for
future gain
in this area. What is new, and most
significant, is the emphasis on sustainability, one of the two main
aims of New
Zealand Fast Forward. This is absolutely
vital and well-informed consumers are now keenly aware of this
dimension of
food production, as well as food safety issues.
As Hon Pete Hodgson said at the launch, ‘sustainability and
prosperity
go hand in hand’.” Agricultural scientist and Companion of the Royal
Society,
Professor Jacqueline Rowarth, who spoke at the announcement at
Parliament,
commented that her work in schools promoting science as a career had
just been
made “very much easier”. This money
offers stable career opportunities for many scientists and
technologists in an
area that directly contributes to the economy. For further information, contact Neville Jordan, President of the Royal Society of New Zealand, 021 421 200.
