Professor Bryan Sykes2003 New Zealand Lecture Tour by Professor Bryan Sykes, Oxford UniversityProfessor Bryan Sykes is The University of Auckland Sir Douglas Robb lecturer for 2003. The Royal Society of New Zealand, in partnership with the British High Commission and British Council New Zealand, is hosting additional lectures in Dunedin (with UNESCO), Christchurch, Nelson, Wellington and Palmerston North as part of the celebrations of the 50th anniversary of the discovery of the structure of DNA. Professor Sykes is known around the world as the best-selling author of "The Seven Daughters of Eve" in which he traces the descent of Europeans to seven women who lived tens of thousands of years ago. He is the Founder and Chairman of Oxford Ancestors and is a Professor of Human Genetics at the University of Oxford. It is for his work in the field of mitochondrial DNA and Y chromosome analysis that he is most famous. His new book, "Adam's Curse", traces human descent through the paternal line looking at the Y chromosome and discovers that men are doomed to extinction. In this lecture I will explain how, from unlikely beginnings, the new science of molecular genetics has transformed the way we view the human past, how it has solved issues that have perplexed scholars for centuries and also how it has demolished any scientific basis for racism. Specifically, I will cover how the study of maternally inherited mitochondrial DNA has led the way to revising what we know about the colonisation of the Pacific and the way in which Homo sapiens first settled Europe, a continent once dominated by the Neanderthals.
