John Lancashire is a graduate of Reading University (BSc) and Massey University (MAgSc) and works an independent science strategist. He is President of the NZ Institute of Agricultural and Horticultural Science, an organisation that comprises nearly 700 members from all parts of the primary sector. It also has 14 corporate members covering the full range of educational, industrial and scientific groups in the primary industries. He was recently elected as an Honorary Fellow of the Institute. John worked as an ecologist/agronomist at DSIR Grasslands from 1965 to 1985 (70 science publications) and was Director/General Manager from 1985 to 1998. This covered the period of the restructuring of DSIR into Crown Research Institutes. He was President of the NZ Grassland Association in 1980-82 and subsequently elected an Honorary Member of the Association.
As a consultant since 1998, John has worked for a wide range of government and private sector organisations including serving on two CORE selection panels. He has written widely on the science system in New Zealand including The effectiveness of the NZ science system in the Royal Society Misc Series No.59 (2001) and Achieving optimal science in the Royal Society Misc Series No.62 (2002).
In 2006 John was invited to join the Royal Society National Science Panel and is proud to be associated with the recently issued Science Manifesto (May 2008).
John also has another life as Chair of The Friends of Queen Elizabeth Park and Chair of the Guardians of Whareroa Community Trust Inc on the Kapiti Coast north of Wellington. These two large areas (ca 1100 ha) of green space covering, dunes, wetlands and hill country provide excellent opportunities for catchment and bush restoration and many recreational facilities for visitors.
