Journal of the Royal Society of New Zealand abstractsA new genus with two new species of soft scale insect (Hemiptera: Coccoidea: Coccidae) from New ZealandChris J. Hodgson* and Rosa C. Henderson**A soft scale genus, Pounamococcus Henderson & Hodgson, new genus, is introduced to take two new species, P. tubulus Henderson & Hodgson and P. cuneatus Henderson & Hodgson, from New Zealand. The adult males and females, 1st-instar nymphs and 2nd-instar male, and female nymphs and pupae of both species are described. Some details with regard to habit and distribution are also included. All known stages except the pupae of both species have campaniform pores on the tarsus of all legs, a feature so far unique within the family Coccidae, but a common feature in most other families of Coccoidea; this character is considered to be primitive. In addition, the adult males have no glandular pouch, a rare condition in known male soft scales outside New Zealand. Keywords: Coccoidea; Coccidae; Pounamococcus new genus; new species; immature stages; adult male; campaniform sensillae; male characters; New Zealand
