The new species
Philopterus novaezealandiae is described from three
samples of lice collected from the two subspecies of kokako (
Callaeas
cinerea (Gmelin)). The possible origin of
P. novaezealandiae is
discussed. This is the first louse species to be described from an extant
species of the passerine host family Callaeidae, the New Zealand wattlebirds.
