Abstract  Paracorophium excavatum (Thomson, 1884) is redescribed from the type locality, and distribution records in New Zealand are amplified. A previously unrecognised species, P. brisbanensis sp. nov., is described from Queensland, Australia. Earlier taxonomists confused the two species and used a mixture of their characteristics in their incorrect descriptions of P. excavatum.
