Abstract   Phreatogammarus helmsii is completely re-described and new distribution records, mainly from the North Island, are given. This epigean freshwater species apparently occurs only in coastal habitats, except in the Waikato River system, and has not been found south of Banks Peninsula. P. waipoua sp. nov. is described and is so far known only from two Northland forests.
