Abstract The previously unknown male of hypogean Phreatogammarus
fragilis is described, and both sexes of epigean P. propinquus
are fully described for the first time. P. fragilis has been found
in South Island habitats only and P. propinquus is so far known only
from Stewart Island. A key is given to the four known species in the genus.
