Abstract ‘Crossway’ and ‘Grasslands Broadway’ red
clovers (Trifolium pratense L.) were bred from a common pool of seed
collected in north-west Spain and Portugal in 1986. When this naturalised
material was grown at Palmerston North, New Zealand, it contained c. 11%
of plants that were much more prostrate and compact than traditional red
clovers. Between 1987 and 1998, these novel features were enhanced by breeding
to produce two cultivars-‘Crossway’ (prostrate, dense, and finely stemmed,
with some weakly rhizomatous plants) and ‘Grasslands Broadway’ (low but less
prostrate, fewer and thicker stems, spreading long distances and rooting
at the nodes). During the selection programme, the flowering intensity and
seed yields of both lines were also increased, and their levels of the isoflavone
formononetin were reduced. Limited trials have shown both cultivars to be
more persistent in grazed pastures than the traditional erect red clovers.
