‘GO152’ yarrow (Achillea
millefolium L.) is the first
cultivar of this species bred for forage use. It was produced at
AgResearch Grasslands, Palmerston North, to provide a more productive
and reliable germplasm for farmers who wish to sow the species in
pasture seed mixes, and for researchers. It follows the release of
cultivars of two other herbs (chicory and plantain) in earlier years.
Yarrow has been recommended widely as a nutritious and medicinal herb
for grazing animals over many decades (Foster 1988), but appears to
have been used only occasionally in New Zealand, and there is no
reliable source of seed.
Keywords germplasm;
yarrow; Achillea millefolium
1Each germplasm is the product
of a completed or significant breeding programme, but the breeders are
not seeking Plant Variety Rights. Germplasms are available free as
“concept cultivars”, intended as research materials or for further
localised breeding projects. Request for seed should be made to the
corresponding author. Germplasm releases are not fully refereed.
