‘GAO153’ strawberry clover (Trifolium fragiferum L.) was bred to provide a fine, dense, leguminous groundcover that requires very low maintenance in the form of mowing or nitrogen fertiliser. A cultivar (‘Fresa’) of the same species was released in the United States for a similar purpose in 1982 (Baltensperger et al. 1982), but ‘GAO153’ was selected largely from plants collected and screened in New Zealand, and is intended for use in this country. There are at present no such legumes designed for low maintenance groundcover in New Zealand, although pasture cultivars of white clover are occasionally used for this purpose.

1Each germplasm is the product of a completed or significant breeding programme, but the breeders are not seeking Plant Variety Rights. Germplasms are available free as “concept cultivars”, intended as research materials or for further localised breeding projects. Request for seed should be made to the corresponding author. Germplasm releases are not fully refereed.
