Abstract Eighteen plant communities are distinguished and their relationship to climatic and edaphic factors is discussed. A striking contrast exists between the communities occupying soils that are relatively deep, well drained and relatively fertile, and those occupying soils that are either shallow because of solid rock lying near the surface or effectively shallow because of high water tables, and infertile.
