VEGETATION STUDIES ON SECRETARY ISLAND, FIORDLAND
PART 5: POPULATION STRUCTURE AND GROWTH OF RIMU (DACRYDIUM CUPRESSINUM)

Botany Division, Department of Scientific and Industrial Research, Christ church.
Abstract Most of the existing rimu trees in six selected stands on Secretary Island were established between
c. 1400 and 1700 A.I). Rimu virtually failed to regenerate in these stands during the 18th century but more recently there has been a recovery, at least at lower altitudes. Rates of growth in diameter have shown a decline from
c. T'OO A.D. to the present. Possible correlation with climatic change is suggested. The findings are based on a census of individuals, cores extracted from twelve trees, and sections through two saplings.
