SYNOPSIS OF THE GRASS SUBFAMILY ARUNDINOIDEAE IN NEW ZEALAND

Abstract The New Zealand species of Arundo are transferred to Cortaderia which is placed in the new tribe Cortaderieae, while those of Danthonia are grouped in the new genera Chionochloa, Notodanthonia, Erytbranthera and Pyrrhanlhera and placed in the newly characterised tribe Danthonieae. All these, together with certain introduced species, are included in the subfamily Arundinoideae. Subfam. Arundinoideae. Tribe 1. Arundineae. Genus 1. Arundo - 1 donax, Genus 2. Phragmites - 1 communis. Tribe 2. Cortaderieae. Genus 1. Cortaderia - 1 julvida, 2 richardii. 3 toetoe, 4 selloami. Tribe 3. Danthonieae. Genus 1. Sieglingia - \ decumbent. Genus 2. Danthonia. Genus 3. Chionochloa - 1 bromoides, 2 beddiei, 3 flavicans, 4 conspicua (Arundo), conspicua subsp. cunninghamii, 5 cheesemanii, 6 rubra, 7 rigida. H flavescens, 9 pallens, 10 antarctica (Bromus), 11 teretijolia, 12 spiralis, 13 acicularis, 14 juncea, 15 australis, 16 pungens, 17 crasuuscula, 18 oreophila, oreophila var. elata, 19 ovata. Genus 4. Notodanthonia. sect. 1. Buchanania. subsect. 1. Setifoliae - 1 viridis, 2 setifolia. subsect. 2. Maculatae-3 maculata. subsect. 3- Buchananiae - 4 buchananii, 5 tenuis, 6 pulchra. subsect. 4. Nudae - 7 nuda. subsect. 5. Thomsoniae-H thornwnii. sect. 2. Semiannularia. subsect. 6. Carphoidea-9 auriculata, 10 gemculata. subsect. 7. Semiannulares - 11 purpurascem, 12 biannularis, 13 semiannularis (Arundo). subsect. 8. Caespitosae - 14 caespitosa. subsect. 9. Laeves- 15 laevis. subsect. 10. Pilosae- 16 pilosa. sect. 3. Notodanthonia. subsect. 11. Clavatae - 17 clavata, 18 racemosa, 19 stricla, 20 penicillata (Arundo). subsect. 12. Unaredia - 21 unarede, 22 gracilis, 23 nigricans. Genus 5. Erytbranthera - 1 pumila (Atropis), 2 australis (Triodia). Genus 6. Pyrrhanthera- 1 exigua (Triodia).
