THE NEW ZEALAND SPECIES OF LIBERTIA (IRIDACEAE)

L. B. Moore

Botany Division, Department of Scientific and Industrial Research, Christchurch

Abstract Specific criteria in Libertia are described. Seven specific epithets have been applied to New Zealand plants and the types of these are discussed. The four species accepted and compared, with notes on distribution and intraspecific variation, are: L. ixioides (Forst. f.) Spreng. (12-ploid); L. grandiflora (R. Br.) Sweet (hexaploid); L. pulchella (R. Br.) Spreng. (diploid); L. peregrinans Ckn. et Allan (hexaploid). All are endemic except L. pulchella, which is recorded also from Australia, including Tasmania, and from the mountains of New Guinea.
