Notes and Comments: A NOTE ON LIGULE LENGTH IN POA COLENSOl

G. T. Daly*

Botany Department, University of Otago

Abstract Characteristic of Poa colensoi is the conspicuous, sheathing, membranous, hyaline ligule; Hooker (1864) described the species P. colensoi from specimens collected on the Ruahine Range and considered the prominent ligule to be a very curious character. In 1915, Petrie recognised a variety having a short, inconspicuous ligule—P. colensoi var. breviligu-lata, of common occurrence in alpine localities of both North and South Islands.
