WOOD ANATOMY OF PODOCARPACEAE INDIGENOUS TO NEW ZEALAND 2. PODOCARPUS

Rajni N. Patel

Forest Research Institute, New Zealand Forest Service, Rotorua

Abstract Anatomical features of the secondary xylem of Podocarpus species indigenous to New Zealand are described. An identification key based on such features has been prepared. Major timber species are readily separated from one another. Anatomical affinities between the indigenous species of Dacrydium and Podocarpus are discussed. There is further evidence that the nature of cross-field pits in different parts of a tracheid is variable.
